A Star Born Beneath the Blitz: The Radio Legacy of Petula

Petula's extraordinary radio career began not in a studio, but in the shadow of war. On 17 October 1942, inside London's underground Criterion Theatre, a nine-year-old Petula stepped up to a microphone during a live broadcast of It's All Yours, intending only to send a message to her uncle stationed in North Africa. When an air raid siren pierced the air, the producer asked for someone to calm the crowd, and Petula volunteered. Standing on a box to reach the mic, she sang "Mighty Like a Rose" with such clarity and emotion that the orchestra joined in and the audience rose to applaud. The BBC was flooded with letters praising the little girl whose voice "sounded as sweet as chapel bells on a Sunday morning." From that moment, Petula became a wartime radio fixture, making dozens of appearances and laying the foundation for a broadcast career that now spans eight decades.

By the end of World War II, Petula had evolved from a child star into one of Britain's most beloved radio personalities. In the pre-television era, her voice became a familiar comfort across the airwaves, featured in countless broadcasts that spanned music, drama, and variety. Throughout the 1940s and beyond, she was a frequent guest and series regular on marquee programmes, her name appearing alongside national treasures like Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields. Whether singing live with orchestras or hosting segments herself, Petula's versatility and warmth made her a fixture of the BBC's golden age. Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, Petula became a familiar presence on British radio, appearing in a remarkable range of serial programmes. Week after week, she captivated audiences with her versatility, frequently performing as both an actress and a singer, often seamlessly blending the two. Her early radio work laid the groundwork for a multimedia career that would soon conquer stage, screen, and international charts.

1960s

With international fame rising, Petula appeared on global broadcasts including The Ed Sullivan Show (radio simulcasts). Her own music was frequently aired, and she gave interviews reflecting on her evolving career.

Continued to appear on BBC Radio 2 and other stations, often as a guest performer or interviewee. Participated in retrospectives and nostalgia-driven programming. In 1973, Petula's life story was presented by BBC Radio 2 as a six part series narrated by Anthony Newley - see images at the foot of this timeline. Her radio legacy was increasingly recognised by historians and fan communities and two special concerts were recorded and broadcast by the BBC in 1992 and 1996. In 1991, Petula took part in a special career retrospective on Success Story for BBC Radio 2. The following year, 1992, she appeared on Woman's Hour, celebrating 50 years in show business. In 1995, she was featured on Desert Island Discs for the third time, sharing the music she'd take to a deserted shore. By 1997, Petula was hosting her own six-part series Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance on BBC Radio 2, spotlighting the stars of British and Hollywood musicals. And in 1999, she was celebrated in Our Pet, a heartfelt tribute presented by Sacha Distel, marking her 50 years in the recording industry.

2000s and later

Petula's catalogue was revisited in themed broadcasts and collector specials. Honoured in documentaries and radio tributes. Participated in interviews reflecting on her career and presented radio specials for BBC Radio 2. In 2002, Petula joined Woman's Hour to reflect on her remarkable career. Two years later, in 2004, she starred in Sunset Boulevard in Concert, with her co-star Michael Ball, bringing theatrical elegance to the airwaves. In 2005, she recorded Driven By Emotion, a four-part series with Desmond Carrington at his home, offering intimate insights into her musical inspirations. By 2006, Petula was headlining Friday Night is Music Night - Petula in Concert, a live celebration of her timeless repertoire. In 2006, Petula hosted a four-part series on BBC Radio 2 dedicated to the life and legacy of Edith Piaf. In 2007, she appeared as the featured guest on Elaine Paige on Sunday, sharing stories and songs from her journey. The following year, she joined Ken Bruce for The Tracks of My Years, selecting the songs that shaped her life. In 2009, Petula presented Bonjour Mr. Aznavour, a heartfelt four-part tribute to Charles Aznavour for BBC Radio 2. Then in 2012, her 80th birthday was celebrated with a two-part special titled Downtown Girl and In My Own Words, honouring her legacy and voice. Fast forward to 2016, she performed live in session on The Michael Ball Show, playing Elton John's piano with grace and warmth. That same year, she also presented A Carpenter's Christmas for BBC Radio 2, a festive tribute to the music and memory of Richard and Karen Carpenter. In 2021, Petula guest presented an episode of Sounds of the Sixties on BBC Radio 2, where she shared her favourite songs from 1960s stage and screen musicals, contributing to the station's celebration of musical theatre.

BBC Transcription Services produced limited-run discs for overseas radio broadcast only, with strict instructions for destruction after use. Though not intended for public sale due to contractual restrictions, many international BBC libraries began selling their stock in the early 1990s. We obtained this full set of the 1973 BBC Radio 2 series "Petula" in the early 2000s; it's now digitised and included in our digital radio archive, while the original discs remain in our vinyl collection. The digitalised transfers sound pristine!

London Lights script, transcription disc and digital transfer on CD

Recorded in 1958 for the BBC Light Programme, "London Lights" was a musical play introduced by Tommy Trinder, featuring Petula as Selina Higgins. Petula performed three songs: "You've Got To Love Everybody If You Want To Stay Happy", "Fibbin'," and "Sonny Boy," accompanied by the BBC Variety Orchestra under Paul Fenoulhet. The broadcast was pre-recorded at the Playhouse Theatre, London which was being operated by the BBC as a recording studio for live performances and plays.

The original script and transcription disc (photographed above), now digitised to CD, were acquired from an estate sale in 2021 and are part of the Fan Archive Collection, marking a significant rediscovery of material once thought lost.
